Marlin Wakeman is thankful to be alive today, after being bitten by not one, but two sharks two weeks ago. The Stuart, Florida, man was in the Bahamas when he was attacked at a marina as he was trying to get on his boat. He was in low tide water when a shark bit him on the leg, including on the kneecap.
“When I got bit, I was pulling myself back in,” Wakeman recalls. “And he grabbed my leg — the first shark did — and pulled me underwater. Kind of scrambled for a second.” Then the shark, which he believes was a Caribbean reef shark, let go and swam away. The 24-year-old then tried to get back on his boat, just as a second shark bit him on the shoulder.
"At that point, I had so much adrenaline going through my body,” Wakeman says. “It was like a fight or flight kind of thing.” Fortunately, he got on his boat, called for help and an ambulance arrived to get him to the hospital. His injuries were so painful, he passed out on the way, but he got stitched up and is on the road to recovery. And while the attack might keep some folks from going back in the water, Wakeman says he’ll be back in the same spot in the Bahamas as soon as he’s able.
