Woman Risks Life To Save Boy From Drowning In Icy River

A Canadian woman is being hailed a hero for risking her own life to save a boy from drowning in an icy river in northern Saskatchewan. Elaine Ratt, a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, had just started her shift at the Sucker River Community Store one day last week when a boy rushed into the store to get help for his friend who’d fallen into the river. Ratt immediately ran to the river where she discovered the boy struggling to stay above the freezing water.

As Ratt inched out on the thin ice to rescue the boy, it began to crack under her. Despite the danger, she continued moving toward the child until the ice gave way and she fell into the frigid water too. She quickly pushed the boy onto a patch of solid ice before eventually pulling herself out and carrying the child to safety.

First responders arrived at the community store and rushed the boy to the hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia and recovered. Ratt returned home to change and was greeted with applause from emergency crews when she came back, a moment that moved her to tears. Reflecting on the incident, she says, "I would rather we risk my life than his," showing her incredible bravery in the face of life-threatening danger.
