Last week, Marian Roeser courageously saved her husband Joe from an alligator attack at their Hilton Head, South Carolina, home. He was spreading mulch with his back turned to the pond behind their home when an 8.5-foot alligator lunged at him. Marian quickly grabbed a tomato stake and struck the alligator repeatedly to protect her husband.
She says she instinctively aimed for the alligator’s eyes and head, determined to free Joe from the alligator’s jaws. “I knew I had to do whatever it took to save my husband,” she says. Lieutenant Danny Allen of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office calls Marian a hero, crediting her swift actions with likely saving her husband’s life.
Joe was airlifted to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including leg bites and scrapes from falling. The alligator was later captured and put down, and authorities are taking the opportunity to remind residents that April and May are peak months for alligator movement. They encourage anyone who feels threatened by a gator getting too close to their property to report sightings.
